Description

The extensive system of roadways in Lake County is constantly being expanded and improved. The majority of work in the public right-of-way is reconstruction and alteration work which public works funds are used to maintain. Each altered facility must be accessible to and useable by people with disabilities, to the maximum extent feasible. Integrating accessible features into planned alterations requires an understanding of both regulatory and usable concepts.

The APWA Chicago Metro Chapter - Lake Branch is pleased to present a seminar which covers the not only the proper design of these accessible features but a perspective from State and Federal sources on your responsibility as a municipality and a design or construction engineer to ensure these facilities are accessible to all civilians. The term PROWAG, or Public Rights-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines, is not limited to those with wheelchairs but for parents pushing strollers, and both visually impaired and hearing impaired pedestrians.

Speakers from the Federal Highway Administration Illinois Division, Illinois Attorney General Disability Rights Bureau, and the Illinois Deparment of Transportation Technology Transfer (T2) Program will be on hand to present these design standards under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
