The Village of Northbrook seeks an energetic, detailed oriented individual to join its team of Water Plant Operator that produce the drinking water for a community of 35,000 residents as well as businesses. This position offers an opportunity to do a wide variety of tasks such as operate a water distribution plant using a computer based control system, perform various lab tests and take water samples to ensure water quality, as well as use one’s mechanical skills to perform various maintenance tasks ranging from building repairs to pump and motor maintenance. Water Plant Operators may also be called upon for snow plowing operations or other emergencies as needed.
The Water Plant is a 24-hour operation during which employees will work by themselves or as part of a team depending on their shift. The schedule for water plant operators rotate between weeks of 12 hour shifts and weeks with 8 hour shifts, with some shifts that will be overnight, on weekends, or on holidays.
Candidates will be interested in math and chemistry, learn new processes and operations, and be able to accurately keep detailed records. Candidates need not have prior experience in the water production industry as the Village is willing to train new employees. Candidates will be expected at a minimum to pass the Class A IEPA license exam within 42 months of hire. Position is salaried non-exempt (per the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150) with opportunities for overtime as needed by the department. Starting pay for the position is $45,469 annually with step increases at 6 months and 1 year upon satisfactory performance.
