Job Advertisement Maintenance Worker I – Utilities Division
The Village of Buffalo Grove (Population 45,148) seeks applicants for a Maintenance Worker I in the Department of Public Works. Public Works is an APWA accredited agency providing high quality and innovative services that utilize technology to streamline service delivery. Ideal candidates would have experience in a water field operations role, while also being proficient in the use of technology including SCADA systems, desktop computers, mobile devices including iPads and other tablets, and the ability to track work accomplished.
Duties: Work involves responsibility for performing a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks involved in the Utilities Division (Water Section) of the Department of Public Works - Operations.
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Maintenance Worker I - Utilities: Work involves responsibility for performing a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks, including, but not limited to locating Village utilities, participates in the excavation of water mains, installation of sleeves, installing taps, replacement of damaged sections of pipe, hydrant repairs, hydrant flushing or fire flow testing. Performs maintenance work in 4 potable water pumping stations along with 12 Village owned sewer lift stations. Participate with drainage and utility section maintenance or repairs as needed. Considerable public contact, often under difficult circumstances, in the investigation of customer complaints and in explaining policies and services. Perform winter maintenance Snow and Ice activities. Operates dump, flat-bed, or other trucks in transporting personnel, materials, and supplies, operates construction-types of equipment. Will be required to work in all types of weather conditions. Ability to use power and hand tools. Operates trucks equipped with snow plows and salt spreaders for use in snow and ice control. Performs related work as assigned and assists other sections as assigned. Must be available to work outside of regular work schedule on a regular basis, including holidays and weekends, often with little or no advance notice.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the types and uses of tools, materials, and standard equipment related to the area of assignment. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of small and medium duty trucks used in the work. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Follows safety policies and procedures. Regular lifting of objects and equipment ranging in weight from 25 to 100 lbs. is required.
Qualifications: Graduation from high school and some experience in work related to the area of assignment, or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience. Possession of valid Class "B" Illinois Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake and Tanker endorsements or ability to obtain same within six months following date of appointment, including Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing requirements.
Salary: The salary range for this position is $ $57,516.16 - $85,716.80, with starting salary dependent on qualifications.
