The Village of Wilmette is seeking to hire a full-time Water/Sewer Maintenance Worker I in the Engineering and Public Works Department. The successful candidate must adhere to the Village’s COVID-19 safety measures as part of their employment per CDC guidelines.
The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of duties primarily focused on the operation and maintenance of the water distribution and sewer collection system. This semi-skilled position performs manual work in public works construction and maintenance activities dealing with water mains, water valves, hydrant or sewer repairs, snow plowing, emergency response, and maintenance work on streets. Work involves tasks requiring the use of hand tools and light to heavy equipment used in general maintenance and repair activities.This position requires availability for emergency response (overtime) outside of normal working hours, participation in the On-Call Specialist Program, snow plowing operations, water main breaks, and other related tasks as assigned.
The successful candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of experience with operating heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Work is often performed under difficult conditions, including extreme weather and confined spaces.The successful candidate must be able to lift up to 40 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds on an infrequent basis.Sufficient strength and agility are required to perform manual tasks for prolonged periods. The successful candidate must possess a valid driver’s license.A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL, Class B) with air brakes and tanker endorsements is preferred or must be able to obtain a CDL and endorsements within 6 months of employment.
Compensation and Benefits:
The starting salary is $55,541 with a salary range of $55,541 to $73,701 to include an excellent benefits package. Benefits include participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), medical, dental and vision coverage, life insurance, and voluntary participation in a deferred compensation program (457 plan), and paid time off.
The successful candidate will undergo a pre-employment physical examination that includes a back evaluation, drug and alcohol screening, audio and vision tests, background investigation, and a driver’s license records check with the Secretary of State’s Office.
