The Village of Oak Park, Illinois is accepting applications for the position of Water & Sewer Superintendent in the Water & Sewer Division of our Public Works Department.This division is responsible for the delivery of safe, potable water to residents and businesses in the Village and for fire suppression.This division is also responsible for replacing broken mains, as well as repair and exercise system valves, repair and replace water meters and pumping equipment.In addition, the division repairs and maintains sanitary and storm sewers that transport Village sewerage into the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District interceptors.
This senior management position provides the leadership and direct management of the day to day operations of the Water and Sewer Division including the assignment of personnel duties, equipment, and materials. Also, ensure that accurate and timely documentation of the hours worked, materials and equipment used to perform the daily activities is accomplished.Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to: maintenance operation and repair of the Village water pumping, storage and distribution systems and maintenance repair of the combined sanitary/storm sewer system. Provide highly responsible staff support and assistance to the Public Works Director and the entire public works department management team.This position is subject to 24-hour availability, 7 days per week, including weekends and holidays.
The ideal applicant will be able to…
Provide administrative and professional leadership and direction;
Ensure the residents of the Village of Oak Park are provided with safe, clean potable water and an effective and efficient sewer system;
Work effectively in a union environment and ensure compliance with all bargaining agreement requirements;
Plan, prioritize, and review the work of the Water and Sewer Division staff. Responsible for maintaining the water and sewer systems for the Village of Oak Park;
Provide management support of the Village’s snow and ice control response during the winter season;
Effectively interact with the citizens of the Village of Oak Park in responding to requests for services and enforcement of Village ordinances, when required;
Ensure that accurate and timely documentation of the hours worked, materials and equipment used to perform the daily activities is accomplished;
Ensure that the daily, weekly and monthly testing and reporting required by the United States and Illinois Department of Environmental Protection Agency are accurately performed, complied, prepared and submitted within the time limits established by the appropriate agencies;
Take immediate action to inform the Village Management staff, residents, and the general public of any problems or situations that affect water quality;
Manage, direct and coordinate the work of subordinates; select, supervise, train and evaluate staff.
This position requires a minimum of five years of increasingly responsible supervisory or management experience in a public-sector water and/or sewer department and must possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in business management, public administration, civil environmental engineering, roadway construction or related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
Possession of or ability to obtain, class “B” CDL Illinois Driver’s License within the first six months of employment and possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class “C” Illinois Water Operator’s License within six months of the hire date.
In addition, the ideal applicant will have excellent customer service skills, strong written and oral communication skills, extensive experience effectively multi-tasking, strong analytical abilities, good time-management skills and the ability to address water and sewer matters at varying levels of complexity.
