The Chicago Chapter is leading the nation in public works study tours! 

After many years of travel to the United States by Australians on study tour, the Chicago Metro Chapter was convinced to send representatives to Australia. We have sent 5 public works professionals via grants from a joint venture by the Chicago Chapter and Municipal Engineers Victoria Foundation. This joint venture included funding from both the Chicago Chapter and the Municipal Engineers Victoria organization. The Chicago-based awardee was chosen through an application process. Members of the Municipal Engineers Victoria Foundation set up meetings with governmental bodies in Victoria based on the awardee’s study topic. It is a similar program to the Jennings Randolph International Fellowship, but it is specific for Chicago-based members to complete study tours in the state of Victoria. This is intended to form strong bonds and long-term relationships between the Chicago Metro Chapter and the Municipal Engineers Victoria organizations. 

Awardees travel to Australia, attend the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) Conference (Australasia’s version of PWX) and meet dozens of professionals that were experts in their fields. Then the study tour awardee goes on an intense tour of different councils (municipalities) in Victoria, using Melbourne as their home base. It is an incredible and overwhelming learning experience, and our Chicago Chapter APWA public works professionals can learn a lot from our international partners.

The Chicago Chapter has committed to providing $8,000 every other year for a study tour participant. The International Committee is trying to raise money to send more APWA members to Australia and continue this amazing program.
